South West Region Summer Meet 1996

The South West Region Summer Meet of 1996 was one of those weekends that people still talk about today. It was a fantastic event, full of fun, laughter and great memories, with everyone throwing themselves into the spirit of the weekend.

The theme was "Back to School", and campers didn't disappoint! DAs from across the region, and even the Regional Councillors, got into the fun by dressing up. There were pupils, teachers and tutors galore, with plenty of imaginative costumes that kept everyone entertained throughout the weekend.

Saturday evening featured the popular band Hi Jack, who had everyone up dancing and enjoying themselves. Friday evening, singer Des Wilde entertained everyone with a lively selection of 1950s and 1960s classics. One of the highlights was watching the Tamar DA Ladies Choir enthusiastically joining in with Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Back Seat , complete with plenty of smiles and laughter.

Sunday morning brought something a little different. The Salvation Army Brass Band led the morning service in the marquee and were amazed as campers seemed to appear from nowhere to fill the tent. The service included a wonderful selection of hymns, a display of timbrel playing by three members of the Salvation Army, and even an opportunity for Tamar's Joy, Liz and Chris to have a go themselves during a light-hearted "Take Two" session.

Alongside all the entertainment, there were the usual sports, games and activities that kept everyone busy throughout the weekend. The rally finished where it had begun, in the school's main hall, with the traditional Speech Day and Prize Giving.

Looking back, it's clear the 1996 South West Region Summer Meet was a tremendous success. The hard work put in by everyone at Tamar DA paid off, and the compliments received afterwards were thoroughly deserved.

For those who were there, it remains a weekend full of happy memories, good friends, great entertainment and plenty of laughter. Exactly what DA camping is all about.
