Add in wall‑to‑wall sunshine and a setting that felt almost tailor‑made for a celebration, and it’s no surprise the whole event was such a success.

Newnham Estate in Plympton proved to be the perfect backdrop for this milestone gathering. The long, level field—trimmed with short grass and wrapped in a sheltering ring of trees—offered a peaceful haven that made everyone forget how close the city actually was. A gentle river traced one edge of the site, bluebells scented the air from the wooded bank, and the warm spring sun set the tone for a relaxed, happy weekend.

The entertainment team pulled out all the stops, delivering two evenings of live music followed by a lively disco on the final night. There truly was something for everyone, and the laughter carried across the field long after the music ended.

One moment in particular is sure to stay in the memory of Regional Chairman Doreen Harris. Her unexpected encounter with Len Jackman on Saturday night became one of those stories that will no doubt be retold with a smile for years to come.

Saturday’s heat brought its own surprise: the arrival of the fire brigade—though not for any emergency. Instead, they came armed with hoses, helmets, and a rather large red elephant known affectionately as Welliphant. Children (and more than a few adults) threw themselves into the fun, donning fireman’s gear and chasing four mischievous “gas flames” that darted around the field. Anyone who wandered too close risked being caught in the crossfire of the hoses, much to the delight of the onlookers.

By the time the fire engine’s 400 gallons of water had been enthusiastically sprayed across the field, the children were still grinning—and their day wasn’t over yet. Before the crew packed up, every young camper was treated to a ride around the field in the engine, a perfect ending to an unforgettable afternoon.

All in all, Tamar DA’s 18th Birthday Meet was everything a celebration should be: sunny, joyful, full of friendship, and packed with memories. A fitting milestone for a DA that continues to bring people together in the very best of ways.
